I've known you for a few years and this is the first time I've asked you questions like this so let's start with a fairly big one. How did you discover your talents/skills?
I looked up a couple of YouTube videos on how to play some songs on the piano and the rest is history.
The power of a YouTube video is so real. They helped shape the path for a ton of musicians including myself in areas that I need to expand my understanding. I know musically I started pretty early, but what about you? Can you share a significant moment that inspired your decision to pursue a creative career?
Honestly, I was overwhelmed by life and I noticed how much of a release it is to play. I remember when my father passed. I went straight to my church and when they asked if I needed anything, I said, “Can I play the grand piano for a bit” with tears running down my face.
Wow, thanks for sharing that moment with us. Definitely something I wasn't expecting, but I am sure that your father is cheering for you. I could imagine that playing in such an emotional moment has also influenced your reason for playing. Speaking of influences, what artists or creators had the most on your work?
Jay Rytthm, Issac Rodriguez, Zac Barnes, Sean Wilson, and Emmanuel Blanco.
I've heard of a few of those names and I'll do my research of course! I know that I've seen Zac Barnes show up in a few places I've seen on social media. Based on your influences how would you describe your creative style in three words?
Release, Calm, and Worship
Yeah I can see that from the few times we've played together in random Guitar Center meet-ups lol! Heavy on the release part because your playing just feels good if that makes sense. So walk me through your typical creative process from idea to completion. How do you come up with what's next?
I think most creatives can agree, that it’s usually spontaneous. I’ll be working on ideas for a song in my next set and BOOM I’m sending to my guys to see if they need it for a project.
Of course! Every spontaneous groove, riff, feel, etc. can lead to the next possible creation. So yeah I agree as a musician with your process. Since the process is spontaneous how do you overcome creative blocks or challenges?
A hurdle I haven’t quite figured out but I’ve noticed in life, inspiration comes more often when things are tough and you need a little time to step away. In those moments, nothing holds me back creatively.
Do you have any routines that enhance your creativity?
Practicing and watching great musicians. We inspire each other in many ways as people. I use that to keep the passion burning.
Man, you're such a talented person, and I know that from firsthand experience, so it makes me wonder with all the things that you've worked on which project are you most proud of, and why?
It’s not a project, but I’m most proud of serving my church. Being able to create a welcoming atmosphere of worship for hundreds of people each service is the best to me.
Well, there you have it folks! Were down to our last question and it happens to be one of the most important questions. How can we keep up with you?
You can follow me on social media. My IG page is @rashadbrownmusic!
